"Black and white" is not the same as "high contrast," and the difference is why some images hold a newborn's gaze for a minute and others get ignored entirely.
Three properties that make an image work:
1. Maximum luminance separation. True black beside true white. A black and white photograph full of mid-greys is technically monochrome but presents very little contrast at any single edge. Line art and solid shapes beat photographs at this age.
2. Large features. A newborn's acuity is around 20/400. Any element smaller than a few centimetres at 25cm distance is below what they can resolve. Bold and few beats detailed and many.
3. Clear, hard edges. Soft gradients and blurred boundaries give the visual cortex nothing to lock onto. The developing system is specifically tuned to detect edges.
What works, roughly by stage:
- 0 to 6 weeks: thick stripes, a filled circle, a bullseye, large checkerboards, simple crosses. Straight lines and hard curves.
- 6 to 12 weeks: simple face outlines (faces are powerfully attractive to babies), concentric rings, spirals, basic animal silhouettes.
- 3 months and up: patterns within patterns, finer stripes, more elements per image, and the beginnings of colour.
What tends not to work: detailed black and white photography, delicate line drawings, anything with heavy mid-tone shading, and busy compositions with many small elements. Pretty to adults, invisible to newborns.
Where to show them. On paper, at 20 to 30cm, during calm-alert time. Propped in front of a baby during tummy time is the highest-value position. Some parents tape a card inside the pram hood or beside the changing table, which turns dead moments into brief visual sessions without any screen.
A note on duration. These sessions should be short — a few minutes. This is not a curriculum, and more is not better. Your face is still the most engaging high-contrast object your baby will see all day, and interaction with you beats any image.
